A new and improved Drive Community
Welcome to the new-look Drive Community website.
In 2018, the Drive Community Toolkit was launched to community-based driver licensing service providers. To date, more than 300 community providers across the motu have used the Drive Community Toolkit in their classrooms to make learning to drive fun with educational games and activities, and help more young people stay on track with getting their driver’s licence – with safety as an underlining focus.
Since then, the team at Drive Community has been hard at work. We reached out to community providers, volunteers and driving coaches to find out how we can improve the toolkit and better support you to create the best learn-to-drive resources for your students.
It’s the feedback that drives us
We want to thank the community providers who generously shared their ideas on how to make the toolkit better.
Through workshops, conversations and surveys we engaged with many community providers and gathered feedback to better understand the challenges you face as you run driving classes around Aotearoa.
What you told us:
- You wanted to build connections and share knowledge with others in the driver licensing space
- You wanted a digital platform that connected to Drive
- You wanted more ability to flex the resources to work for different group sizes and skill levels
- You wanted less wordy, more gamified activities that students with lower literacy or English as a second language could feel comfortable using
These insights have helped inform not only improvements to the toolkit but new initiatives to help support and connect the community.

Community providers told us they wanted to stay connected with Drive Community updates. This is why we’ve created the eNewsletter – to keep you up-to-date with what’s happening in the community.

An improved toolkit
The Drive Community Toolkit is a selection of free resources to help community providers help young drivers get their licence. It’s designed to support your teaching, not replace it.
Since its first launch in 2018, every resource in the toolkit has been reviewed and refined to better engage students through fun activities, while teaching important driving skills and how to be safer on the road.
The activities have been improved to flex for different licence stages, skill levels, and classroom sizes.

New card games to replace previous activities
Drive Road Code card game
Players answer questions and compete to build the longest road. This was highlighted as the most popular resource within the toolkit.
Because the card game was a clear favourite with students for being fun and accessible, two new card games were developed. These new card games are based on two of the activities from the original toolkit.
True or False card game
Players learn how to identify common driving myths by responding to a series of scenarios in a quiz format.
Road Signs card game
Players learn about common road signs by matching them to their meanings in a game of memory.
Promote your next driver licence class
Within the digital hub, new and improved promotional resources have been made available to help you promote your next driver licence class.
These include
- Word template promotional posters that you can customise with your own information
- Flyers and posters that you can print at home or get professionally printed
- Social media quiz tiles
We would love your feedback on the promotional resources – if there is anything else you wish was available, please let us know by sharing your thoughts with us.
