The fun way to learn

The Drive programme uses a play-based model of learning. This means creating challenging ‘growth’ moments that are interactive and fun. For the Drive Road Code, this has been translated into a gamified experience of the road rules as a card game.

This approach to educational material has numerous benefits. It allows students to stay motivated as they collaborate or compete with each other. It encourages deeper engagement with their learning through a quiz format and different play modes.helps young drivers retain knowledge for longer through play-based learning. And it

New and improved

Since its first launch in 2018, the Drive Community Toolkit has been reviewed and refined to better engage students through fun activities while teaching important driving skills. Part of this update included giving the card game a refresh.

The instructions have been updated to be more intuitive.

  • They now include photos of the game in use, new illustrations and a quick reference key.
  • Video instructions have also been created as an additional format that provides an even more engaging way to help show students how to play.

Players now have plenty of ways to enjoy the game. They can play in teams, use the game as a set of flashcards, go through the road cards solo or in a group to test their driving knowledge.

Players can up the difficulty by putting in place a two or four-second rule for answering questions. Alternatively, they can simply pick the chapters they need to practice and play with just those road cards.

Active learning

The premise is simple – study the New Zealand road code by answering questions and competing to build the longest road.

We tested the card game with young drivers. They liked how it was visual, competitive and how easy it was to play, quickly engaging with it. The game is a fun way to educate young Kiwi drivers about the road code.

The simplicity of the card game allows community providers to quickly encourage deeper learning with the rules of the road. Plus, the learning translates to the experience on the Drive website for students looking to further their studies if they have access to a device.
